Thank you W.T.

As I continue to work on reflection during this time of uncertainty, it occurred to me, I never shared this particular story, one that I am incredibly proud of.

Eleven months ago, W.T Johnston passed away after a long battle against a rare form of cancer along with complications of double lung transplant surgery. I had a tough time hearing of such a tremendous loss, W.T. had made such an impact on me in the short amount of time I knew him.

After he passed, during the 2019 High School Football State Championship coverage, we [Tanner Rottman- editor/producer, and Christopher Fitzpatrick -photographer] put together a feature story in W.T’s honor.

Feature story about Head Coach W.T. Johnston, Newton TX

It was an emotional piece for us to put together, but it was really important to me that I share his story. I’ve covered high school football in Texas for the last five years, and with each year I develop stronger relationships with each team and coach I get a chance to meet along the way. It’s a privilege, and one that I’m incredibly grateful for, but it also makes losses like this one so difficult.

The day after I heard the news about W.T’s passing, I had to get on a plane and fly to Kansas City to cover the Rangers series against the Royals. On the flight over, I began writing a thank you note to W.T.

I wanted to share that note here. The full letter is attached to the link below. For anyone who had the pleasure of knowing W.T. I hope you agree, he is someone who will never be forgotten.

Rest easy W.T.
